IMMATERIAL GIRL

by Shay Martin

A quip at the self-obsessed, in the vein of Madonna's "Material Girl." Where that song concerns the embracing of that which can be embraced, this work pokes fun at those who reject the same.

‘Cause we are living in a material world

And I am a material girl

— “Material Girl,” Madonna

Some things happen, some things don’t;

Why’s it my affair?

Yeah, some things will, some things won’t;

Decidedly, I’ve no care.

You can beg, and you can plead,

But I won’t know what’s “right” (that’s right!).

‘Cause I do think and thus I am,

So that wins me the fight.

We are living in a material world,

But I am immaterial girl.

Yeah, we are living in a material world,

But I am immaterial girl.

The truth is that all facts lack class;

The mind is where to be.

It is more true there, anyway,

So says philosophy.

Say, what is this, objection fair?

It can’t the least sway (no way!).

‘Cause when you try to have your say,

I’ll turn my head away.

You know that we are living in a material world,

But I am immaterial girl.

We are living in a material world,

But I am immaterial girl.
