An anecdote from the early days

When the delegates were leaving the conference, Moses, as the record reads, walked ahead of Romulus while Theseus and Lycurgus strolled together behind. A woman stepped out of the watching crowd, and she approached that leading man eagerly and asked:

“Well, sir, what is it to be, civilization or barbarism?”

“Civilization, ma’am,” he replied, “if you can keep it.”

NOTE: It is not known who this woman was.
